5 Common Plumbing Emergencies and How to Handle Them
Plumbing issues can strike at any time, often when you least expect them. While it’s always best to get professional help, knowing what to do in those first few moments can help reduce damage. Here are five common plumbing emergencies and what to do before getting in touch with us.
1. Burst Pipes
A burst pipe can cause serious water damage fast. If you see water pouring from a pipe or spreading damp patches, turn off your stopcock immediately—usually located under the kitchen sink. Then, turn on all your cold taps to drain the system. Avoid using the heating and call us straight away so we can get it sorted.
2. Blocked Drains
If your sink is draining slowly, there’s an unpleasant smell or water is backing up, you’ve likely got a blockage. Try using a plunger or a drain snake if you have one. Avoid chemical drain cleaners—they can cause damage to your pipes. If you can’t clear it, don’t worry—we’ll take care of it for you.
3. Overflowing Toilet
To stop an overflowing toilet, lift the cistern lid and push the flapper valve down to stop water entering the bowl. Turn off the water supply valve (usually behind or beneath the toilet). Once things are under control, give us a call so we can find the cause and fix it properly.
4. Leaking Taps or Fixtures
A small leak might not seem like much, but over time it can cause damage and waste water. If you spot a leak, turn off the water supply to the fixture and avoid using it. Then, get in touch with us and we’ll handle the repair quickly and efficiently.
5. No Hot Water
If your hot water stops working, check your boiler or water heater has power and the thermostat is set correctly. With combi boilers, look out for any error codes. If you’re unsure or still without hot water, give us a ring and we’ll take a look.
